A Dream Too Expensive

I am a huge fan of the Mexican National Team.

Si se puede!!! Yes we can!!!

Like millions of fans, I waited years for the World Cup to return to North America. I dreamed about seeing Mexico play in person. I imagined the atmosphere, the excitement, and the chance to be part of something special.

Then I looked at the ticket prices.

I almost fell backwards.

And honestly, I was frustrated.

How is it that ordinary, hardworking people cannot afford to attend one of the biggest sporting events in the world?

The World Cup is supposed to be for the fans.

The people who work every day.

The people who save their money.

The people who buy the jerseys, watch every game, and support their teams through every victory and every defeat.

Yet many of those same fans are being priced out.

It feels like the World Cup is becoming an event for the wealthy while everyday fans are left watching from home.

I am not asking for free tickets. I understand these events cost money to organize. But when a hardworking person looks at the price of a ticket and immediately knows it is impossible, something doesn’t seem right.

The passion for soccer doesn’t belong only to people with money.

It belongs to the construction worker.

The teacher.

The cashier.

The police officer.

The nurse.

The single parent.

The people who work hard every day and still struggle to justify spending that much money on one game.

Those are the people who fill stadiums.

Those are the people who create the atmosphere.

Those are the people who make the World Cup special.

I know I am not the only fan who feels this way.

After waiting years for the World Cup to come back, many of us were excited. Many of us hoped. Many of us dreamed.

Only to discover that the experience we dreamed about is simply out of reach.

That is disappointing.

That is frustrating.

And yes, it feels unfair.

I’ll still be cheering for Mexico from my living room.

But I can’t help wishing that the World Cup was a little more accessible to the ordinary fans who helped make it what it is today.

¡Vamos México! 🇲🇽⚽
