If you could start a new business right now, what would it be?
If I could start a business right now, it would be a party decoration business.
A few years ago, I started watching YouTube videos because I wanted to learn how to make balloon decorations. I am not an expert yet, but I can honestly say I do a pretty good job. I also enjoy working with my Cricut and making sublimation crafts.
The one thing I know about having a craft business is that I would love what I do. I consider myself a very creative person, and when it comes to crafts, I am definitely a perfectionist. I will work on something until I feel it looks just right. I take pride in what I create, and I love seeing an idea come together.
So, you may ask, why haven’t I turned it into a business or at least a side hustle?
Honestly, I am very shy, and advertising myself is not one of my strengths. Pricing is another problem for me. I feel bad charging people too much, so sometimes I end up doing a lot of work for very little profit. By the time I buy the materials and put in all the hours, I sometimes wonder if I made any money at all! That is probably one of the biggest reasons I haven’t officially started a business.
But I already have the name.
VanNat.
I actually came up with that name more than 30 years ago. When I was in my 20s, I thought someday I would have two daughters. I had already picked out their names: Vanessa and Natalie. VanNat comes from the first three letters of each name.
Life had a different plan for me. I never had those two little girls. Instead, I have one handsome son whom I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.
But after all these years, the name VanNat still carries on.
So if I could start a business right now, I already know what I would do, what I would create, and even what I would call it.

Who knows? A name I created in my 20s might still have a story left to tell.
