What’s the best way to meet new people while traveling?
That’s a great question, and one I wish I knew the answer to!
One of my biggest struggles in life has always been meeting new people. It doesn’t matter whether I’m at home, at a social gathering, or on vacation. I’ve always been a very quiet and shy person. I’ve been this way my entire life.
And I have to admit, I really wish I were more outgoing!
I admire people who can walk into a room full of strangers and start conversations as if they’ve known everyone forever. They make it look so easy! Meanwhile, I’m usually the quiet one, observing everything around me and wishing I had the confidence to do the same.
It’s not that I don’t want to meet people. Believe me, I do! I just can’t seem to get myself to take that first step.
Sometimes I wonder how others perceive me. Do they think I’m unfriendly, stuck-up, or conceited? Because nothing could be further from the truth.
I’m not unfriendly or conceited. I’m just shy.
And sometimes I wish people understood the difference.
Here’s something I know about myself: I’m a loyal friend. I really am. Once I make friends, I tend to keep them for a long time. I value my friendships and genuinely care about the people in my life. My problem isn’t keeping friends. It’s making that initial connection.
So, What About Making Friends on Vacation?
I wish I could tell you I’ve met wonderful people while traveling and developed lifelong friendships, but the truth is, I’ve never actually made a new friend while on vacation.
Sure, I’ve had small conversations with strangers. You know, the usual vacation small talk about where we’re from or how we’re enjoying ourselves. But that’s usually where it ends.
I’ve never exchanged phone numbers or contact information with someone I’ve met while traveling.
And sometimes I wonder why I can’t take that conversation one step further.
I see people on vacation laughing and talking with complete strangers, and before you know it, they’re making dinner plans or exchanging contact information.
And I think to myself, How do they do that?
I would love to be able to do the same!
Maybe joining group excursions, participating in activities, or simply smiling and saying hello would make meeting people easier. Perhaps the next time I have a nice conversation with someone, I should try keeping it going instead of letting the opportunity pass.
But when you’ve been shy your entire life, even something that simple can feel like a huge step.
Making Friends as We Get Older
Now that I’m getting older, I find myself wishing I had a bigger circle of friends.
Friends to laugh with, talk to, travel with, and share life’s little moments with.
When we’re younger, friendships seem to happen naturally through school, work, and everyday activities. But as we get older, meeting new people can become more challenging, especially when you’re shy.
Sometimes I wonder how many wonderful friendships I’ve missed simply because I couldn’t bring myself to say hello.
I don’t want my shyness to keep me from making new memories or meeting people who could become lifelong friends.
I know I can’t suddenly change my personality and become the most outgoing person in the room. But maybe I can challenge myself to take small steps.
Maybe the next time I’m on vacation, I’ll be brave enough to start a conversation or ask someone if they’d like to keep in touch.
Who knows? Maybe I’ll come home with more than photographs and souvenirs. Maybe I’ll come home with a new friend!
One thing I truly believe is that you’re never too old to make new friends.
And I know I have a lot of friendship to offer.
I just wish it were easier for people to get to know me.
Now I’d Love to Hear From You!
How do you make friends when you’re on vacation?
Are you naturally outgoing, or are you shy like me? Have you ever met someone while traveling and stayed friends long after the vacation ended?
And here’s something I’ve always wondered: When you see someone sitting quietly by themselves, do you assume they want to be left alone, or would you consider walking over and saying hello?
Because sometimes that quiet person is someone just like me, someone who would love to make a new friend but doesn’t know how to take that first step.
I’d love to hear your experiences and advice. Maybe you can teach this shy traveler a thing or two about making friends on vacation!
