A Reflection on Loss, Compassion, and the People We Leave Behind

Death has a way of making us stop and think, even when the person who passes away wasn’t someone we were particularly close to.

This week, I learned that a former coworker had passed away. She had been retired for a couple of years, but the news still shocked us.

She was a woman with a very strong personality. She ran the office much like she ran her home—with authority and determination. She was outspoken, sometimes rude, and often harsh. She didn’t make many friends, and truthfully, not everyone liked her.

But now she’s gone.

And instead of remembering the difficult moments, I find myself thinking about her family.

Because regardless of how we knew her, someone has lost a loved one. Someone has lost a mother, a wife, a relative, or a friend. Someone is grieving a person who meant the world to them.

Something else surprised me. There will be no funeral or memorial service.

I couldn’t help but wonder why.

Perhaps it was her wish, or maybe her family chose to grieve privately. Whatever the reason, I respect their decision.

Still, it feels strange that someone who once had such a strong presence is suddenly gone, without a formal goodbye.

As I get older, moments like this make me reflect on life and how we treat one another.

We spend so much time worrying about things, disagreeing with people, and sometimes holding on to feelings that, in the end, may not matter.

What will people remember about us when we’re gone?

Will they remember our kindness, our words, or the way we made them feel?

The truth is, we won’t be liked by everyone, and that’s okay. But we can still try to leave behind more kindness than hurt.

I wasn’t friends with my former coworker, and I won’t pretend our relationship was something it wasn’t.

But I still think about her.

I think about her family and the emptiness they must be feeling.

Perhaps that’s what makes death so bittersweet. Life continues for the rest of us, while someone else’s world has changed forever.

We don’t have to be someone’s friend to feel sadness when they pass away. And we don’t have to forget their flaws to respect their life.

May she rest in peace, and may her family find comfort during this difficult time. 🕊️❤️

Life is short. Be kind when you can, appreciate those around you, and remember that every life matters to someone.
